The accident occurred on August 13 at a tunnel being constructed as part of the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project. A sudden flow of water and debris entered the tunnel following a landslide, trapping several workers inside.
Two More Workers Found Dead
Rescue teams recovered the bodies of the two remaining missing workers during the search operation on Tuesday. Officials identified them as Lukas Topno from Jharkhand and Chetan Poyam from Chhattisgarh.
With the recovery of the two bodies, the total number of people who lost their lives in the accident has reached 10. Twelve other workers who were inside the tunnel were rescued alive, although several suffered injuries.
Rescue Operation Comes to an End
A large-scale rescue operation was launched immediately after the accident. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, local police and other agencies worked together to search the tunnel.
The operation was particularly difficult because large quantities of sludge, water and debris had accumulated inside the tunnel. Rescue personnel used pumps and heavy equipment to remove water and clear access routes.
After the recovery of the final two missing workers, officials said the search and rescue operation had concluded.
What Caused the Chamoli Tunnel Accident?
The accident was linked to a landslide that resulted in a large amount of debris and water entering the under-construction tunnel. The sudden flooding left workers with very little time to move to safer areas.
The difficult terrain and conditions inside the tunnel made the rescue effort challenging. Teams had to work carefully while dealing with accumulated sludge and unstable conditions.
